A medical intensive care unit (MICU) is a hospital department that provides intensive care for patients who are critically ill or have life-threatening conditions. MICUs are staffed by a team of highly trained doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The medical specialty that deals with critically ill patients is called intensive care medicine (ICM), or critical care medicine. ICM involves a variety of medical professionals, including: Physicians from many specialties, such as surgery, internal medicine, anesthesiology, neurology, and neurosurgery Pharmacists Nutritionists Social workers Physical therapists ICM specialists, also called intensivists, are responsible for diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions. They also provide life support, invasive monitoring, resuscitation, and end-of-life care.
