Surgery is a medical procedure that uses manual and instrumental techniques to diagnose, treat, or improve the body: Diagnosis: Surgery can help determine if a disease is present. Treatment: Surgery can remove or repair a part of the body. Improvement: Surgery can alter bodily functions, reconstruct or improve appearance, or remove unwanted tissues or foreign bodies. Some types of surgery include: Appendectomy The surgical removal of the appendix, which is usually performed to treat appendicitis. Laparoscopy A minimally invasive procedure that uses a thin lighted tube with a video camera to examine the organs in the abdomen or pelvic organs. Craniotomy A procedure that can be performed to remove a brain tumor, relieve pressure in the brain, or repair a skull fracture. Some surgeries can cause significant pain afterward or throughout recovery, even with anesthesia. The fear of surgery is called tomophobia
