A tuberculosis unit (TU) in a hospital is a separate department that manages and treats patients with tuberculosis (TB): Responsibilities TUs are responsible for providing TB services, including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, in their assigned geographical area Structure TUs are based on National Health Mission (NHM) health blocks and are created based on population. A TU consists of a Medical Officer-Tuberculosis Control (MO-TC) and a Senior Treatment Supervisor (STS). Treatment The Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) uses the Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) strategy, which involves short-course chemotherapy given intermittently. DOT is a supportive mechanism that ensures patients receive the correct drugs, in the right doses, and for the right duration. Symptoms of active TB include: Bad cough Chest pain Coughing up blood or sputum Fatigue or weakness Loss of appetite Weight loss Chills Fever Night sweats
