Ultrasonography, also known as ultrasound or sonography, is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body: Ultrasound imaging can be used to: Diagnose diseases, such as cancer Check the fetus during pregnancy Guide medical procedures, such as biopsies Evaluate, diagnose, and treat medical conditions During an ultrasound exam, a transducer (probe) is placed on the skin or inside a body opening. A thin layer of gel is applied to the skin to help transmit the sound waves into the body. The sound waves bounce off of body structures, and the reflected sound is recorded to create an image.
